Young journalist gets Hofstra debate assignment before 12th birthday

News organizations always claim to be “looking out for the little guy.” Well, the “little guys” may have officially found their own voice in the media.

Bridget Bernardo came from her hometown of Wakefield, RI to report the presidential debate at Hofstra University. At 11 years old, Bridget is the youngest journalist out of more than 3,000 who are working “Spin Alley,” the media’s headquarters for the evening.

Bridget responded to an advertisement for a contest she saw while reading TIME For Kids. She won the contest – an opportunity to be a reporter for the magazine at the debate. Already displaying true journalistic gumption, Bridget is not planning on letting her age hold her back. She is aiming high with her goals for the evening.

“I want to interview, maybe, the candidates,” Bridget told Long Island Report’s Alexi Knock.
